![]() As Stuart, Hardy is an absolute powerhouse, a beguiling mix of the hilarious and the downright frightening, but above all utterly humane and believable. Tom Hardy may be a big Hollywood name now but I firmly believe his best performances are those in the early start of his career, often on a low budget. Where they would place syrup and mawkishness, we go full tilt towards quirkiness (the film is littered with amusing and occasionally disturbing animated moments) and the downright acerbic. Thankfully, this is the kind of biography feature we do far far better than the Americans. The book was such a success it was inevitable perhaps that an adaptation would be made. ![]() In doing so it takes in the many contradictions that was Stuart addict, career criminal, advocate, homeless man, violent psychopath, campaigner, disabled man and victim of sexual abuse and charts pivotal moments in what led Stuart to become the man he was. As the title of both book and film suggests, the book took the unusual approach of detailing Stuart's life from his adult life down through to his childhood. ![]() Stuart: A Life Backwards was a 2007 BBC film based on the award winning biography, penned by Alexander Masters, of Stuart Clive Shorter a homeless man living on the streets of Cambridge in the year 2000. ![]()
